Latin Mass not defiance
Monday,
May 24, 2004 –
I would like to address two of the
inaccuracies and misconceptions in your recent April 29 articled entitled,
"Mass Appeal".
The subtitle "Some local Catholics defy doctrine in favor of Latin services" is erroneous.
Doctrine is that which is taught. Catholic doctrine means that body of truth revealed by God which a Catholic is bound to believe. The Catholics who attend the Sts. Peter and Paul Roman Catholic Mission know that the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is the greatest possible act of divine worship acceptable to God.
The Tridentine Mass is an affirmation, not defiance, of Catholic doctrine.
The article also states, "Practicing the Tridentine Mass is considered renegade by local Catholic officials ..." The Tridentine Mass was never forbidden from being offered. The Catholic faith and the Mass have always been intimately connected.
I'm sure that the Catholic officials of the diocese agree that the Mass is the pinnacle of Catholic belief and should express the Catholic faith.
There is no defiance of Catholic doctrine or "renegade" practice at Sts. Peter and Paul. Rather, there is a commitment on the part of the congregation to preserve the Catholic faith and practices of the church which have been held for centuries.
